National Service

National Service Malaysia's new move to build a society where racial differences are recognised yet not discriminated upon, where our young people are taught to stay out of trouble and make best use of their time. Where they are taught discipline, initiative, care and concern and do community service. For 3 months, (randomly) selected 17-year-old youths from across the country will come together in different boarding schools and universities to "bond" and set the standard for a harmonious society. They will engage in non-armed combat training, community service, team building activities and loads of other programmes in order (as the government aims) to build youths to impact and change the society for the better. Why am I saying all this? I have a 17-year-old brother. And whether it was good news or not, he was not chosen for national service. I think he'd fare well without it, he's quite a good boy as it is. Well, he'll still be around and going to college although I don't know what he will be studying. Then again, neither does he! While some of his friends end up running and marching and fixing vandalised public amenities, he'll be off embarking on a tertiary education, preparing him for working life. As for me, I had a good round of classes and discussions on the law (its interesting, as some of you may not believe). It has been a really refreshing and mentally stimulating day today, with all the legal discussion going round the class. Awesome stuff. More work to do tomorrow, so i'll sleep soon. Oh yes, happy birthday to two very good friends, Josh and Tim. May God bless you!
